Protecting Cabinets from Heat, Moisture & Spills

Your kitchen cabinets face daily exposure to heat, steam, water splashes, and cooking splatters. Taking a few preventive steps can dramatically extend the life and beauty of your cabinet finishes.

Heat Protection

  • Keep cabinets away from direct heat sources — toasters, coffee makers, and slow cookers generate significant heat that can warp or discolor finishes over time.
  • During oven self-cleaning cycles, remove nearby cabinet doors and drawers. The extreme heat (800°F+) can damage adjacent cabinet finishes.
  • Use heat shields or trivets on countertops near cabinets to deflect rising heat from hot pots and pans.
  • Ensure proper ventilation above your stove with a range hood to redirect heat and grease away from upper cabinets.

Moisture & Water Damage Prevention

  • Wipe up any water or liquid spills immediately — even sealed wood finishes can be damaged by prolonged moisture contact.
  • Check for leaks under the sink regularly. Slow drips cause hidden water damage to sink base cabinets.
  • Use cabinet liners inside sink base cabinets for an extra layer of protection.
  • Ensure your dishwasher seal is intact — steam leaks from dishwashers are a leading cause of cabinet finish damage.
  • In humid climates, consider using dehumidifiers or silica gel packets inside cabinets to prevent warping.

Handling Spills & Stains

  • Act fast — the longer a spill sits, the more likely it is to stain or damage the finish.
  • Blot (don't rub) spills with a soft cloth. Rubbing can spread the stain and scratch the finish.
  • For grease splatters, use a cloth dampened with warm soapy water, then dry thoroughly.
  • For stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda and water, apply gently, then wipe clean. Test in an inconspicuous area first.
  • Never let acidic substances (vinegar, lemon juice, tomato sauce) sit on cabinet surfaces.
