What to Avoid: Products That Damage Cabinet Finishes
Using the wrong cleaning products is one of the fastest ways to ruin your cabinet finish. Here's a comprehensive list of products and practices you should never use on your cabinets.
Products & Practices to Avoid
- Don't use harsh detergents, strong soaps, abrasive cleaning products, scouring powder, scouring pads, or other harsh abrasives.
- Don't use spray polishes containing silicone or petroleum solvents.
- Don't use products that contain ammonia.
- Don't use bleach or products containing bleach.
- Don't use your dishcloth or sponge to clean and dry cabinets — they may contain grease or particles that can damage the finish.
- Don't expose cabinets to excessive moisture. Wipe dry immediately if water splashes onto surfaces.
- Don't use brass and silver polishes on hardware. These polishes contain harsh chemicals that can damage the finish of the cabinet.
Safe Alternatives
- Use a dedicated, clean microfiber cloth for cabinets only.
- Warm water with a drop of mild dish soap is the safest all-purpose cleaner.
- Oil-based (emulsion-type) furniture polish for periodic deep care.
- Ammonia-free glass cleaner sprayed on the cloth (not the cabinet) for glass fronts.
- Soft-bristle brush for textured or carved cabinet details.
